Led by then-U.S. Army Major Charity Adams (played by Kerry Washington), the Six Triple Eight Central Postal Directory Battalion accomplished a nearly impossible mission that only they could accomplish. They succeeded because of the skills they gained by simply being their true selves. This is evident through raw, moving performances, while masterful camerawork captures the beauty and desolation of the environments in which these women worked and thrived against all odds.
Even the disinformation that followed them back home could not erase their personal courage. It is one of the Army's seven values that speak to soldiers' willingness to face fear, danger and adversity (physical or moral).
"Facing moral fear or adversity can be a long, slow process of staying on the right path, especially if those actions are unpopular with others. You can develop personal courage by standing up and acting every day for what you know is honorable," the Army said.
This underscores the importance of the storytelling medium. Because even those who feel like their voices aren't being heard, or that their stories may never be told, can always have a voice in a space that's true to their story.
Six Triple Eight is a must read for anyone who appreciates powerful storytelling and the lasting power of love. There were many moments in the movie that made the hair on my arms stand on end and I felt the energy as if I was with them in World War II. I am sure that every viewer who shared this moment with me in the cinema felt the same.
