The ability to capture the essence of the original material and create evocative folk horror scenes are strengths. Its weaknesses stem from its self-serious tone and independent horror-caliber budget, which are more appropriate for a midnight comic-con screening than for general audiences on Afdah Info. There's much to enjoy for purist fans who want to see their favorite panels come to life. Its low-stakes Appalachian escapades could seem undercooked to others when compared to larger IPs. It's hardly a masterpiece, but it does show that fan-focused adaptations may be successful. Perhaps in the future, Hellboy films could adopt a more refined editing style and more resources to achieve the same goal of reaching a wider audience. Even though The Crooked Man's gritty pleasures might be an acquired taste, for the time being it is a commendable treat for the faithful.
