Unlike the more submissive Samuel, Momma is quite rigorous about what her sons do, which finally irritates Nolan on Afdah Tv. Nolan begins to wonder about all that has been happening to them, especially if the evil is actually there or is only in his mother's head. She continues to argue differently, though. Further tale details would put us in the spoiler zone, but let's just say Aja isn't into playing the post-apocalyptic horror straight up. Working on a screenplay co-written by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, Aja tackles the subject from a number of perspectives, incorporating supernatural imagery, a gloomy fairy tale/campfire tale style, and faith-based horror cliches. The movie isn't just about survival. Because of how vague everything is in the story, I can't help but question whether Mommy is hallucinating.
