Description
Macau International Airport, the city's only aviation hub, is likely to have handled a total throughput of 1.76 million passengers in the first quarter of this year. If the forecast materializes, it will grow 1.3 times year-on-year and register a recovery in volume of about 75% compared to the same quarter of 2019, the period before the COVID-19 pandemic.
This follows a press statement on Wednesday from Macau International Airport Inc, the facility operator also known by its Portuguese acronym CAM.
In terms of flight movement, the first quarter's recovery rate compared to the same period in 2019 was 76%, equivalent to 14,000 flight movements.
Currently, most air routes at Macau Airport serve destinations in mainland China.
CAM aimed to introduce a larger number of flights "connecting" to "directly" international services or "medium to long-range" services from elsewhere to help Macau's aviation hub expand its "global reach," the company said.
"China Southern Airlines will begin operating the Beijing Daseng-Macao route from April 1, 2024, facilitating passenger transfers from Macau to Russia via Beijing Daseng [International Airport] and providing baggage consignment services," it said
The CAM also mentioned that Korean Air plans to launch services from Macau to Seoul, the capital of Korea, in July this year. Such services will provide the possibility of connecting to Korean Air's network service destinations in Europe and the United States.
