Former Women's Tennis No. 1 Halep Appeals Ruling Against 4-year Doping Suspension

The British BBC reported on the 25th that female tennis star Simona Halep (Romania), who was suspended for four years for doping, appealed.

According to the BBC, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, said "Halep has filed an appeal requesting that her existing ruling be set aside and her sanctions reduced."

Halep's life now depends on the outcome of the CAS arbitration. 스포츠토토

The CAS panel will decide whether to accept Halep's claims after a hearing.

CAS said that the schedule, including hearings, has not been confirmed.

Halep was provisionally suspended from competition after traces of taking the banned drug roxadustat were discovered during a doping test conducted at last year's US Open.

Then, in May of this year, an analysis of his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) revealed additional suspicions that he had administered banned substances.

Last month, an independent tribunal formed by the International Tennis Integrity Institute (ITIA) recognized the doping allegations surrounding Halep as true and suspended her from competing for four years.

Halep said she would appeal, saying, "I take the rules that govern tennis very seriously, and I have never knowingly or knowingly used banned substances."

Halep claimed that she later found out that the supplements she had been taking since 2022 were contaminated with roxadustat, and that she had accidentally used the banned substance.

Halep is a star player who has won a total of 24 tour competitions.

In major tournaments, he won the singles title twice, at the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019.

Since 2017, she has been ranked No. 1 at the end of the year in the Women's Professional Tennis (WTA) singles rankings for two consecutive years.

Halep, now 32 years old, is likely to be effectively forced into retirement if she does not receive a 'not guilty' verdict from CAS.

Roxadustat is a drug prescribed to patients with anemia or kidney problems, and its function is to increase red blood cell production.

Athletes in sports that require cardiorespiratory endurance, such as road cycling and long-distance running, are often caught taking this drug.
