Casino Regina announced that one of Regina and Saskatchewan's top entertainment venues will be closed for the time being. This week, Game Property announced that the show lounge would be temporarily shut down to begin renovations in early 2023. The renovation of the show lounge is part of the casino's final renovation, which has been underway since January 2020. The project was approved by Sask Gaming, which invested about C$18 million for maintenance of the resort as a whole. Shanna Schulhauser, communications director at Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation, noted that the site had ceased work and that the casino could now begin the final part of the renovation. She explained that the agency had planned the process, and claimed that the weeks-long shutdown would allow the company to make scheduled repairs and upgrade entertainment venues.
According to reports, the project will not change the structure or composition of the theater, which opened more than 20 years ago in 2001. Its renovation will not be a major one, but rather a full-scale renovation. The cost of upgrading to the Show Lounge and surrounding areas in fiscal 2022-23 is estimated to be around C$5.5 million.
Usually, a 700-seat concert hall holds more than 200 events every year, including local production and fundraising events. It is a place where domestic talent and foreign celebrities can entertain local people. The concert hall, which had been closed for some time due to unprecedented conditions, reopened in November 2021, and is still recovering its business.
Casino guests and locals can enjoy the first performance of 2023 on March 27. Rovers will start working, and then host Charlie Major will perform on March 30. Then, the stage will be taken by Matt Andersen & The Big Bottle of Joy Band on March 31, and George Sorogut and Destroyers on May 6.
And as for the casino's event center, the hotel recently received some complaints about the accessibility of the theater. Some elderly people complained that the nearest entrance to the concert hall was closed, and they had to use the main entrance of the casino and walk through the whole building to get to the show lounge.
In early 2021, the arbitrator confirmed that a former employee of Casino Regina would not regain his job in gaming properties. The employee lost his job in 2018 after two racist claims and tried to appeal the company's decision. The former dealer and supervisor was represented by the Canadian Public Services Union, and the union supported the appeal by claiming that he deeply regretted the events.
